 Arfah Salleh, PhD, FCPA(Aust)

Arfah Salleh is Professor of Human Governance at the Graduate School of Management, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) where she is now Dean. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy; a Master’s degree in Finance & Investment; and a PhD in the area of ICT integration in accounting education and in systems design.  She is also a Fellow member of CPA Australia and a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants with training and work experience in investment and fund management at James Capel International Asset Management, London in 1986 and at UPM from 1987 to 1989, respectively.

Since assuming full-time academic position in the late eighties, Arfah has always maintained close linkage with the accounting profession and industry through serving on the committees of various professional accountancy bodies. For instance, from 2006 to 2008, she was appointed a member of the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board (MASB). In 2010, Arfah was invited to participate as a member of the Industry Advisory Panel initiated by Deloitte. She was also involved in an advisorial capacity to the training of entrepreneurs initiatives by SME Bank (2009) and MARA (1990). Currently she is adviser to CBL Sdn Bhd on R&D.

In her academic capacity, Arfah has among others, served as consultant to the SETARA 2009 and 2011, MQA universities and university colleges rating initiatives and the PolyRate for rating of Malaysian polytechnics. She is also an Adviser to the Ministry of Education on the rating of institutions offering teachers’ training (2011) and the design of accounting curriculum at the secondary school SPM level (2005-2009); and the Ministry of Higher Education, Polytechnic Division in the area of accounting curriculum development (2009). She now chairs a Working Committee for the Ministry of Higher Education to develop the criteria for evaluation of business schools in the country with members comprising industry captains and academics. Arfah is also the Adviser for the ICT implementation in accounting programme at Tampere University of Applied Science, Finland and an Adjunct Professor at Sunway University College apart from sitting on the Board of Studies of a few public universities’ programmes. She is the Founding President of the Malaysian Accounting Association (MyAA).

Arfah holds a world patent for Methodology of Accounting Teaching besides earning various awards for her courseware invention at the institution, national and international levels, including the Woman Inventor of the Year Award 2005 from the International Federation of Inventors’ Association, Geneva; Kedah State Woman of Excellence Award 2006; and the UPM Vice Chancellor Fellowship Award for teaching excellence, 2005.

At UPM, she now represents the Graduate School of Management on the University Senate and sits on various committees on teaching and research. Her current research interest is in the areas of human governance; human-centred epistemological and ontological worldviews; the application of quantum physics in management and leadership; and inter-subjectivity and ethics in accounting.

She regularly speaks on these issues to academics, government and industry professionals including at the KPMG Audit Committees Institute Roundtable Discussion sessions as well as other local and international conferences.

Arfah has also trained senior officials of the Ministry of Higher Education who serve as members of the Board of Directors of universities in the area of Board Responsibility for Financial Reporting; the Ministry of International Trade in Human Governance and now advises Tenaga Nasional Bhd on developing their Leadership Training Programme modules that embed human governance besides facilitating the ‘training-of-trainers’ sessions.

She has written various books and journal articles including co-authored with Professor Dato’ Dr. Aziuddin Ahmad, a book entitled Human Governance: A Paradigm Shift in Governing Corporation published by MPH; and a monograph for the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) on 'Soulful Stewardship: Steering Corporation through Human Governance'. In January 2010, their article on ‘Human Governance: Bringing Meaning in the Life of Professional Accountants’ was among ten articles awarded the Article of Outstanding Merit by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).
